British Columbia has one of the oldest online gambling markets in Canada and also one of the most restrictive. Since 2004 the province has run its own site through the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, and it has never opened the door to private operators the way Ontario and Alberta have. That leaves BC players with two very different routes: the provincial platform, or an international casino that accepts players from British Columbia. Gambling in BC operates under the Gaming Control Act and is overseen by the Independent Gambling Control Office, which took over the regulator’s role from the former Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch in April 2026.
On tax: recreational gambling winnings are generally not treated as taxable income in Canada. That changes if gambling is effectively your business or your main source of income, in which case the Canada Revenue Agency may take a different view. If you are in that territory, talk to an accountant rather than a casino site.
